Women's HealthMany people assume that Women’s Health refers only to pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, but there really is more to it than that. It also includes problems like incontinence, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and pelvic pain that can occur throughout a women’s life span.
Women’s bodies are different from men’s in many ways; they have different bone structures, body compositions and their musculoskeletal systems react differently to stresses and movements. Because of these differences, women encounter very different musculoskeletal problems. A women’s health specialist is able to address and correct the gender-specific impairments that a woman may face. |
PregnancyPregnancy is a major event in a women’s life. Musculoskeletal dysfunctions which show up both during pregnancy and postpartum define a significant part of Women’s Health. Low back, pelvic, and hip pain are common problems women face during these times. Frequently, such problems can be helped by working with a physical therapist that specializes in women’s health. These specialized physical therapists are also trained in the areas of prenatal and postpartum exercise programs, pain management during labor and delivery, and post cesarean care. Physical therapy can be a great adjunct to medication and other conventional treatments for many problems and can make a real difference in a woman’s quality of life.
