Don’t live your life feeling DIZZY or UNBALANCED!

Whitefish Therapy & Sport Center is pleased to offer Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT). VRT is highly effective at treating the symptoms of many conditions, the most common being benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV), vestibular hypofunction, and concussions.

VRT is a specialized type of physical therapy designed to reduce or eliminate symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, and motion-related disequilibrium. These symptoms can be caused by conditions of the inner ear and from injuries to the head and neck, such as concussions or whiplash.

Although dizziness, vertigo and disequilibrium can be linked by a common cause, they have different meanings; and, describing them accurately can mean the difference between a successful diagnosis and a missed one. Dizziness is a sensation of lightheadedness, faintness, or unsteadiness. Unlike dizziness, vertigo has a rotational, spinning component; it is the perception of movement without true physical motion. Disequilibrium means unsteadiness or loss of balance, often accompanied by spatial disorientation, the inability to determine your true body position.

Given over 80% of people who have suffered a concussion experience dizziness and imbalance, it is important to be treated by a provider who can wade through the complexities of the brain and its sensory systems. Patients often have co-occurring conditions after a head injury such as eye movement dysfunction and neck pain that can exacerbate their symptoms. It is beneficial for the patient to be screened by a physician prior to starting physical therapy for the above conditions to identify medications or other health issues that could be contributing to these symptoms.

Fawn Lintner-Bartlett, PT, DPT, is one of the only providers in the Valley specially trained in VRT. Fawn performs an assessment of eye movements with video-oculography goggles, conducts balance assessments, and reviews medical history to develop comprehensive treatment programs for patients.
